Buick Lesabre Steering Column Reassembly

This is a video of me reassembling the steering column in my 1990 Buick Lesabre after tearing it apart. I had to make the shifter move but had lost the keys. In the process I dislodged a vital component of the ignition system, a metal rod spanning the gap between the igintion tumbler and the ignition switch. My solution? A pull switch start ![]()
Video Rating: 4 / 5
@delacerdaa It might be a loose wire on one of the sensors, a bad sensor, or low brake fluid. Try using a code reader that can read codes from the ABS system to identify the source of the problem. You can use one for free at O’Reilly’s or some other automotive stores.
Hey why is my anti lock sensor light keep turning on and off? My brkes feel fine……
my 91 also seems like it bogs down during acceleration it runs smooth but it lags almost as if there’s a vacuum leak… But I haven’t been able to trace it back to anything. I also had to go digging for a charcoal canister because the one I had was saturated with fuel, which leads me to believe I could also have a fuel issue. Any help would be appreciated.
my 91 was stolen, they busted the left side shrouding off of the column and busted the lock cylinder. now to start it I have to use a screwdriver and pull back on the piece that your rod connects to to start the car. I have since installed a pushbutton from autozone
I hope I don’t sound like a jerk…..But… you say in your video that
this all started because you lost your key. A locksmith could have made you a new key
for less than $100.00 dollars……….Whats your time worth??
@Midnightfilmcrew I’m not exactly sure! As far as I know you have to remove the steering column from the car, then pull the steering wheel and the shrouds off of it. This should give you some access. I assume the problem you are running into is that the plug won’t fit through the covers. I think there might be a plastic piece that is in the way too.
Be really careful if your car has an airbag!
i have a 91 lesabre custom currently am trying to remove that signal switch and replace it how do we get it through the column? help would be greatly appreciated
I have a 90 lesabre too…probably 300k+ miles…The odo only works when it wants to…it shows 260k…It’s no longer the daily driver, but it’s a great dog taxi…Plus I don’t worry about door dings. It’s just too damn reliable to get rid of, the AC even works like an arctic blast too. 3800′s are Awesome…if GM still built cars like this, they wouldn’t have gone bankrupt….Oh yeah…it still passes California smog check
That’s what my friend said. I’m going to try to see if he’ll do it again (it’s hard to get ahold of him, and I REALLY don’t want to have to do it myself) and this time, put the locktite on. I have a video on here showing exactly what it’s doing. Thanks for the help!
The screws that hold everything together have locktite on them from the factory, if they keep getting loose you might want to reapply locktite. If that doesn’t help, something might be stripped and you would need a new steering column. Replacing these is not too bad, just a few bolts in the engine compartment and wires under the dash : )
I have a ’91, and mine has had a problem (twice now) where the steering wheel gets loose (it has tilt) and the left turn signal flashes slowly or won’t flash at all. The right signal works fine, though. A mechanic friend of mine tightened some bolts that were deep down in the column, but now it’s doing it again. I wonder if there’s a more permanent fix to the situation?
