Escalade HIDs: Installation Tips, Advantages, and What to Look Out For
Cadillac Escalades are used by their owners for a wide variety of purposes, as they are versatile vehicles equally as capable of being classy cruisers as they are of being quick transporters and effective workhorses. Though you may have equipped your Escalade with all the basics for your day-to-day needs, an area often forgotten about by drivers is lighting. Headlights are among those essential pieces of driving technology that are never thought about, at least until they suddenly don’t work while you’re driving 60mph down a freeway at midnight. To avoid lighting problems, many drivers have turned to Escalade HIDs, which replace traditional halogen headlights with lights that are longer lasting and brighter than their predecessors. Below, we’ll go over some HID information you should be aware of before changing your Cadillac over.
Installation Tips
Typically, installation periods should range from about an hour to an hour and a half, though that time will be longer if you’re new to automotive upgrading or need to make physical cuts in the vehicle in order to fit new components through. Escalades have been produced for many years, so there will be different challenges faced depending on what model-year vehicle you own. For example, a 2002 Cadillac Escalade should be able to adapt to HID light use rather quickly, though people have reported struggling to find an adequate place to install the ballast. Ballasts must be mounted as far away from the engine as possible to avoid overheating, and they also must be installed on flat surfaces. Other models from different years may have different component arrangements under the hood, so you’ll just have to be creative in how set each piece.
Performance and Efficiency Results
One thing you’ll certainly get by using this new technology is improvement. HIDs can last up to 10x as long as the halogen headlights equipped on your Escalade, while they can also shine up to three times as brightly. Add those advantages together with enhanced peripheral vision at night and better light reflection off of important road signs, and you’ve got the makings of some high quality headlights. Still, Cadillac Escalade HID headlights won’t last forever, so keeping a spare bulb kit around could save you some wait time later on if you’re still driving your Escalade years from now.
What to Look Out For
If you make quick judgment calls about the performance of your vehicle’s new HIDs, you’re setting yourself up for needless worry. A major thing to look out for is headlight color disarray. If one of the new HIDs is shining a milder purple or blue while the other is emitting light of a deeper color, don’t stress it just yet. These new lighting components will take time to adapt to your vehicle’s systems, and both lights should even out in color within several hours of use. Similarly, if you begin to hear humming noise coming out of the front end of your Escalade, it’s no reason to panic. System adaptation has strange side effects, though the humming should cease within 10 or so minutes. If it hasn’t stopped by then, check the newly installed components, and it’s likely you’ll find the ballast loose or a wire hanging. Other than that, the only thing you should keep an eye peeled out for is a dimming headlight, but that shouldn’t happen for years.
