The GM exhaust system is one of the most frequently rejected parts of a vehicle. This is because most people tend to focus on body and engine improvement. However, what most people don’t know is that the exhaust system performs a very important role. Vehicles create harmful gases during the combustion of fuel. The GM exhaust system carries harmful exhaust gases away from the passenger compartment and also converts most of the harmful gases into acceptable by-products. Moreover, it helps in reducing the sound made by the internal combustion engine, reduce the temperature of the exhaust and control the emissions that come out of the vehicle.

How does the GM exhaust system work? The GM exhaust system begins with the exhaust manifold on the engine. Hot exhaust gases flow from the manifold through the front or header pipe into a catalytic converter. The converter changes unburned hydrocarbons (fuel) and carbon monoxide into water vapor and less harmful carbon dioxide. Inside the stainless steel case of the converter, there is a ceramic honeycomb coated with a thin layer of platinum. When the exhaust gases pass through the hot converter, they are changed. From the converter, the exhaust flows through another pipe to the muffler. On most cars, the exhaust now flows out the tail pipe, but on some models, the exhaust passes through a secondary muffler called a resonator. Finally, clamps and rubber mounts called hangers support the exhaust system under the vehicle.

Rocks, dirt, and mud affect the performance of the GM exhaust system. If there is less power, foul odors, or odd noises coming from the muffler, it might be time to replace the GM exhaust system.

The GM exhaust tip is one accessory that is designed to enhance a GM vehicle’s appearance and to help in the exhausts systems performance. It adds a bit of style and uniqueness to the tail end of a car and it can also actually affect the volume of the exhaust tone. The larger the GM exhaust tip , the more volume that one will get from it.

GM exhaust tips are available in various types, styles, and sizes. They are either resonated or non-resonated. Non-resonated tips are just plain stainless steel tips. The resonated tips are lined with fiberglass to dampen the exhaust noise a little further. Sizes range from 2 inches to 5 inches wide. Styles to choose from include round, oval, square, slashed, etc. Exhaust tips can either be welded on, or if possible, clamped on.

How to Change Windshield Wiper Blades

One may find that the windshield wiper blades on the car may not be working as well as they used to. To prevent the occurrence of such accidents, it is advisable to place a cloth or an old T-shirt on the windshield when replacing the wiper blades.

Thus, it is advisable to replace the wiper blades in the store where the purchase is done. This is because the car owner may require and receive assistance while looking to replace the wiper blades on the car. Additionally, it is possible to compare different kinds of wipers prior to settling on the most ideal. With wipers, the car owner may opt for a refill as opposed to replacing the entire blade. Still, this may only occur in instances where the rubber parts of the blade are worn out and there is need to replace them. Worn out wipers should be removed before the new ones are fixed. This is done by first lifting the wiper arm off the wind shield. This way it is easier to work on them. The wiper blades then need to be detached from the wiper arm by pressing or sliding the release tab connecting the two and finally pulling to separate them.

Sometimes, the wiper arm may snap back and hit the wind shield. It is therefore important to rest the wiper arm against the windshield while waiting to install new wipers. In order to properly install the new wipers, the car owner should make sure that they correctly follow the set of directions attached to the new wiper blades. Once the wipers have been installed, they should be tested to ascertain that they function as they are supposed to. It is important to have a flat head screw driver on hand when changing wind shield wiper blades.

Most of the people love to drive fast and they know that there are lot of things they can tweak on their car to make it to perform better; engine, suspension, wheel and tire modifications all makes a big difference, but even then most of the people overlooks the brake. Brake systems are specially designed for safety and reliability; you do not face any difficulty in understanding what the components are. There are two types of brakes in cars- disc brake systems and disc/drum combination systems. Earlier cars have disc brakes on the wheels and in the back of car drum brakes are installed. But today modern cars have disc brakes at all the four wheels.

The disc brakes have the following components- the pedal, the master cylinder; secondary or slave cylinders; anti lock braking; hard brake lines; soft brake lines; brake calipers; brake pads; and brake rotors. The brake pedal is situated inside the car and the master cylinder is installed to the firewall which is in the hood. Brake pedal forces the master cylinder to push brake fluid through the brake lines when you just push the brake pedal. Brake lines and master cylinder are attached wit each other and run to the brake calipers found at each wheel. The brake calipers have one to eight pistons in them. The pistons are forced by the brake fluid so as to compress the brake pads on to the brake disc. The brake rotor, AKA brake disc, is attached to the hub which is attached to the axle. So, lots of friction is created when the brake pads compress onto the rotors, in turn slows your car.

Brake responses because of the brake pads and rotors affect. Some of the brake pads have more ‘bits’ than others which respond a bite faster, but they can be difficult to live with in everyday. If you want to improve the response of brakes than performance pads are good option. The performance pads are replaced anyway. Through new brake rotors also you can improve the response when you hit the pedal but not as much as the performance pads will. It is true that rotors are really very different and help you to brake frequently especially when you are descending a mountain road. Brake pads perform better and at their best for a sustainable time period because of better cooling and out- gassing technologies.

The driver feels better when he gets brake pads, rotors, lines and fluid and all these things make a car to stop safely. The stopping distance and the brake feel along with response have no connections with each other. Big brake kit is the only way if you want to shorten your shopping distance. Larger diameter rotors, upgraded calipers, and new brake pads are included in the big brake kit. The role of larger diameter rotors is very important because to stop the wheels they give the brake system leverage. Usually the big brake kit requires larger wheels to accommodate the larger brakes but your goal is not longer distances than it is worth the time and investment both because these are quite expensive.

One more things that you should consider while buying car brakes that in which condition your cars tire are. Is the tires of the car really slows your car and the grip they have is a big factor when you stops your car. You should keep in mind that invests only in the decent tires so as to maximize the brake systems of car and minimizing stopping difficulties.

Brakes are very necessary part or feature of the car. You should be careful regarding the maintenance of these and keep proper track of their condition. If the brakes on your car are worn out then it proves to be a great risk not only to your life but to other passengers on the road. You should not avoid even minor problems. Do manual transmissions really get better gas mileage? & if so, could anyone explain, because it seems like you would waste more gas since you normally rev the engine higher. Thankns.

Yes they do. The reason is because the way automatics are built, they dont transmit as much power to the road. Say your engine is 200 HP. By the time that power gets to your wheels, it’s a lot less, this is called drivetrain loss. With a manual you’re maybe getting 180 wheel horse power, but with an automatic you’re getting maybe 170 wheel horse power.

Automatics are also heavier. And YOU decide what gear you want to be in, an automatic may be in 3rd gear when I could really be in 4th gear to save some gas.

Plus you do not rev the engine higher, in mine I go to 3000 rpm, shift, 3000 rpm, shift, over and over.

And you also have an extra gear.

Yes it does by getting all of the old trans fluid out and replacing it with new. Even the converter fluid is replaced this way.

How To Properly Care For And Maintain Your Windshield Wipers

Most of us take for granted many of the wonderful technologies that we have today. One example would be the windshield wipers. Can you imagine not having windshield wipers? Even after the windshield wiper was invented in 1903 it was not electric. Instead, the driver had to reach out the window and do it by hand. This could be kind of tricky and dangerous to do while driving down the road. In 1910, the windshield wiper became a standard item on cars, but was still not made electric for years.

Even though the windshield wiper is a great feature to have, they can still be irritating. It’s amazing how often windshield wipers need to be replaced. This great little invention seems to wear out quite quickly. The rubber wears quickly causing the blade to not properly clear the windshield. Of course the one spot that seems to quit working first is right in the driver’s line of vision. For most people this is quite irritating, and causes a trip to the store for a new set. Here are a few things that will shorten the life of your windshield wipers and have you making the trip even more often.

One cause of quick wear on windshield wipers is when they are used to remove hard snow. How many of us get in the car in the morning, start it, and turn on the windshield wipers? I know that I’ve been guilty of this one. You don’t have time to start the car, or clear the windshield properly, so you just use the wipers. This may clear your windshield for you, but it is hard on your wiper blades. The blades are just rubber and using them to scrape the hard snow off the windshield can cause them to become deformed.

Another cause of quick wear would be trying to use your wiper blades to scrape the ice off the windshield. When it’s that cold outside who wants to stand outside and scrape the ice off their windshield? It can be especially damaging if you just squirt a little windshield washer fluid on the windshield to get the ice wet, and then use the wiper blades to scrape it off. This little trick seems to work pretty good, and quickly too. The problem with this is it will also cause your wiper blades to become deformed and not work properly.

Winter is not the only time your windshield wipers may become damaged. Some people use their windshield wipers to get dirt or sticks or other debris off their windshield without using the windshield washer fluid. Using your wiper blades on the dry glass is not good for them. If you need to get debris off your windshield you should use the windshield washer fluid first so that the blades can move easier. The fluid allows the blades to glide smoothly across the windshield instead of scraping and making that horrible noise they make when it’s dry.

When your windshield wiper blades start to chatter when you use them, or start to leave streaks you may want to invest in a new set. Just remember what causes extra wear on your windshield wiper blades, and try to avoid doing it.
