I film the all-new, limited edition Panoz Abruzzi Spirit Of Le Mans at it’s North American debut during the 2010 Petit Le Mans endurance race at Road Atlanta. Besides possibly being the most evil-looking production car ever, it is also a technological marvel. I am pleased to present the first full video of this car on youtube. The Abruzzi Spirit of Le Mans consists of only 81 examples, which in 2013 represents the number of 24 Hours of Le Mans races since the event’s inception in 1923. All of the Spirit of Le Mans editions will be sold in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The Corvette ZR1′s V8 engine is used to produce over 600 hp in the Abruzzi, which, like every other Panoz, is handbuilt in Hoschton, Georgia. In addition to the mammoth power and torque from the LS9, the car is super light and super strong, being the first road car built with the new REAMS material, which is stronger and lighter than carbon fiber. When this “open wheel unification” happened, I was excited. But once I found out they were ditching the new Champ Car Panoz, which provided exciting racing, for the bland Indy Dallara chassis, I was disappointed. I was also disappointed that we have lost Champ car, because the IRL and Champ Car both provided two distinct forms of racing, oval and road course, with some events overlapping.

I would think it would be interesting if somehow the restricted the Panoz’s performance so it could race alongside the Dallara.

I just think it’s unfortunate that instead of “uniting” the two series, IRl instead just ate Champ Car for lunch.

At least now we’ll have more teams racing against eachother.

I think that people like you need to stop thinking in terms of “they won, we lost”. The bottom line is this-American open-wheel racing won. There is now one series again. That is the only way forward for the sport here.

At the end of the day, there wasn’t a need or support for two series. Whether you were a Champ Car or IRL fan, it’s now time to put aside the “us” and “them” and focus on making the IRL the best open wheel series it can be.

That’s what I am going to do.

P.S. The chassis the IRL uses is a DALLARA.

Question by thechief66: What do you think the cause of the Panoz at the ALMS race on Belle Isle?
It seemed to me that the car was coming loose by turns 4-6 (where I was sitting) towards the end. I don’t recall the car pitting for tires, and I don’t know if they did a driver change. So was it driver fatigue? Or a need for a new set of tires?

The cause was most likely tires. The whole track seemed pretty slick, I watched on The Speed Channel.

Of course, after they scraped it, the old LMP picked up a few victories.

But why was the LMP 07 such a big failure. The idea seemed brilliant, with a low center of gravity for “revolutionary” handling. Was the reason why it failed because of the engine? Reliability? Why?

Maybe I can pick one up really cheap. How cool would that be driving into work in one of those?
Realistically, I doubt I could afford to buy one rim and tire right now, never mind the whole car.
