Question by Eddie R: What is the general perception of Saturn cars? And will it be axed by GM?
I had a 1995 Saturn SL2 for 6 year’s and 90,000 Miles. (I bought it at 100,000 K. I had many problems with it but it drove me everywhere and I am sure was a nice ride back in the day. It seems Saturns have improved in recent years with the Vue’s and other models. What is the general attitude about these vehicles? Are they considered to be above or below in popularity, reliability and reputation with other GM vehicles. Will GM axe them, and if so, is it because they just are not that popular?

Question by perry_stitch: Interchangeable auto parts between other cars?
How can I find out if auto parts are interchangeable( by year, make, model, etc)- maybe a website or a 1800-number? Having a lot of problems with my car and can not afford to get new parts, so used parts are my only option. I have a 2002 Saturn L300 and the the junk yard has a 2000 L-series and need to know if there interchangeable.

Chief Executive Officers of DaimlerChrysler USA, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation inspirited the Congress a couple of days ago to tackle the vital concern on the skewed and undervalued Japanese yen at a “Manufacturing Summit” conducted by the U.S. Senate Democratic Policy Conference on Capitol Hill.

Alan Mulally, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company, said during the forum that through an open market, the values of the different currencies should be impartially determined and not pre-determined by the governments. He further said that China is the recent focus, making Japan most troubled to the automotive industry. He added that the American government needs to mandate the Japanese government in order to allow the yen reach its true value again since its skewed yen is one of the reasons of a large deficit in the auto sector with the United States.

President Stephen Collins of the Automotive Trade Policy Council (ATPC) said that almost all major currencies, excluding the yen had appreciated tremendously against the dollar. In effect, the Japanese yen has extremely diluted – in contrast to the status of the global financial markets – against the dollar and other major industrialized currencies.

Collins added that a serious destruction and disruption to American automakers is being caused by the misaligned yen. In 20 years, the Japanese yen has now reached its lowest value. He explained that the devaluated yen drives billions of subsidized dollars into Japan’s car companies that results to direct boosting of Japan’s exports vehicle and parts. The long run effect, Collins further explained, is that Japan’s car, truck and SUV exports to the U.S. will be rushing with the aim to reach 2.5 million vehicles this year.

The CEOs of DaimlerChrysler USA, Ford and General Motors made clear in the forum with the Congress that they profoundly support Senator Debbie Stabenow’s legislation – S. 1021.

The legislation requires the US Treasury to bilaterally take aggressive action – that would reach the international level – to properly realign the Japanese yen with the other major OECD nations.

Collins concluded that the Congress is making a considerable action on this matter that the resolution, in whatever way, of the misalignment of the yen is one of the major elements of assuring US competitiveness in the auto industry.

I just bought a 93 Saturn Coupe and I need to know what parts are commonly replaced on this car. I will be going to the wreckers this week and I want to strip down a saturn for parts for future use.

Many parts aren’t worth replacing used, like a radiator or heater core for example which quickly rust when removed from the car. You might take the alternator, but I’d take a chance that your starter motor will last the life of your car. I wouldn’t bother fixing the A/C on an older car because it’s too expensive and you need special equipment. If the car is identical, you might take the computer, idle air control and EGR valves. Of course the catalytic converter and air bags are worth money but may be hazardous to bother with. Read the service bulletin titles on your car to see what goes wrong with it:

Question by Toledo Engineer: How is there not a category for Saturn cars?
There are categories for loads of other brands that are scarce here in the states. And dont tell me that it’s just because it’s Saturn. I could say the same about Kia. There is a reason why they GIVE them away in the buy one get one deals.

Like GM’s european ‘Opel’ division or Australia’s ‘Holden’ division which are both all GM.

Many people may not know this, but the American Cadillac Catera was built on there European ‘Opel Omega’ design with there European V6 which is also in Saturn’s sold in America.
The Austrailian built ‘Holden Monaro’ is also from the same basic Opel platform and is what the American Pontiac GTO is based upon also but with a Chevy small block V8.
The Holden Monaro and Pontiac GTO were built on the same assembly line in Austrailia.
What I’m asking is, are the assembly line workers in Austrailia and other countries crossing there fingers that they don’t lose there job’s too?

Gm is the largest in the world.
Ford is third largest in the world.

Chapter 11 screws the shareholders.
Government pensions and other pensions have lots of money in auto stocks.
After chapter 11 the bondholders of the big three become the shareholders. Buy bonds at 14 cents on a dollar.!
After chapt 11 the unions will be 8 feet under with all invalid contract and not even a pot to piss in.

No matter what the government does, we are screwed.
All USA government debt is Trillion. Chapter 7 for them.

I own a 1878 GMC 24 foot RV. It gets 10 MPG. I know gas mileage is not the only thing that dictates the American consumers. Lots want expensive foreign cars. I do not know why the big three will not raise the price 00 per car to make it similar to foreign cars?

Example:
You can buy a Porsche in the USA a lot cheaper than buying it in Germany where it is made.

The designer of porsche lives down the street. He says it is the market that controls it.
