Q&A: Why do Chrysler cars have such poorly designed brakes?

Question by shawn D: Why do Chrysler cars have such poorly designed brakes?
They’ve been a car company for a long time, couldn’t they at least make a decent braking system? This question goes mostly to the Dodge Trucks, Jeeps and Chrysler Minivans.

I have a Dodge Stratus and the brakes suck too.

They are an example of mass producing and trying to make as many as they can as fast as they can. They are too cheap to try and make a decsent break system. It’s kinda like the McDonalds of cars.

I used to own a Chrysler and never had problem with the brakes. They were as good as any car. In Honda… I can say that were the biggest POS ever, replaced Discs 3 times and pads every 6 months. But that is my experience on those cars.

In your case, what seems to be the problem? Why you say they are crap? Give us more info and we can make a sound judgment, unless this is a rant, I see no point on your case.

Hello from Europe:-)

I went for 6-weeks motoring holiday in Canada and the US two years ago – all 2006 models rented at Hertz. I drove first a Ford Explorer – brakes too weak for such a car. Then a Ford Taurus and finally a Chevy Equinox. Their brakes sucked big time.
Drums on rear wheels? It’s 21st century for crying out loud.

When I came back and drove my Mazda I almost bit the steering wheel at the first corner because I forgot that my car actually could brake.

But I guess it’s just what manufacturers think is right for a particular market. And most US cars that are sold in US with drums at the rear get discs in Europe. And ABS as standard.

Suspension-wise it’s similar. US Nissan Murano is softer than European version. European versions of Chrysler/Dodges 300/Magnum are “harder” than US versions.

The design of the front brakes on light Dodge trucks is virtually identical to Chevrolet’s light truck, the heavies got a big boost when they swapped to 4-disc design, ALL suffered from a funky rear ABS set-up, Earlier Grand Cherokees suffered from a poor pad/rotor set-up which cost them dearly in court. Never saw excessive problems with the mini-vans.

Read ANY review in any car magazine (CR is not a real car mag) and you will see that Ford always has had braking problems. Always the worst in the pack.
I have never had ANY problem with ANY Chrysler’s brakes in the many I have owned. They are different than GM, in that with GM you have a hair trigger pedal, and with Chrysler it takes more force (but it’s predictable). Ford’s brake feel is somewhere in the middle, and the imports don’t matter (one crash and they are done, with brakes you would like, or not).

Wow…I dont know where you get this info but if you can put some proof to this i would love to see it. If there is one thing Chrysler does have its usually good brake and a heater. If you dont think so drive a GM. There is a reason the aftermarket brake companies survive on upgrading GM brakes. Feel free to email SSB brakes and ask them what there best sellers are!! All the proof you need. Enjoy!
