Q&A: What do you think about Citroen cars?

citroen cars

Question by Toaster o’ Death: What do you think about Citroen cars?
I just want a general opinion about the cars made by citroen. especially the C4.

In my opinion, it is a very good car. Just a few remiders: 5 star EURO NCAP safety tests, good hdi diesel engines developed in colaboration with peugeot, very smooth suspension on all the citroens (go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tdEKmnWUy4 to see jeremy clarkson test it).

What do YOU think?

My last two cars have been Citroen, the fist being the little Saxo which I absolutely loved, small, nippy yet economical to run. Only changed to the larger Picassa because I needed a bigger car. But love Citroen for comfort, safety etc and next car would also be a Citroen.

Unfortunately, Citroen no longer has a presence in the US so it’s hard to comment on their current model offerings. My only point of reference is my ’70 DS 21 Pallas which is driven infrequently. This car is wonderful and a lot of fun despite the 4-cylinder engine sounding like an agricultural device. It brings a certain “joie de vivre”, a panache, so infrequent these days when most cars are like household appliances.

I travel to Europe often and see many Citroens, Renaults and Peugeots there. IMO, I don’t think French cars attain the same build-quality or engineering savvy as German cars.
But, I’d really love to have the new Citroen C6 if that were possible.

I work at a citroen dealership and their newer range of cars (C2,C3,C4 etc) are a LOT better than their older ones like the Xantia and BX.

They generally do not have many mechanical problems and the problems you are most likely to experience (if any) would be electrical, although this is true of all car makes now due to the sheer quantity of electrics fitted to them.

The C4 is one of the first Citroens that i would personally consider buying because i like its looks, interior, engine range and handling. I think they are very competent cars at very cheap prices, but i would never consider having a petrol engine as they are terrible!
I think the best engine to go for is the expensive 2.0 HDI or the more realistically priced 1.6 HDI.
DO NOT under any circumstances get one with any kind of fancy gearbox (sensodrive, MGS, AL6 etc) as they give no end of problems, stick to a manual gearbox.
Also do not get a C4 with any new stop-start system that turns off the engine at traffic lights to save the planet as this will give you problems. (its referred to in the trade as the stop-stop system as thats all it does!)

In fact the less gadgets and gizmos you have fitted to your car the more reliable it will be.
But remember the suspension fitted to the C6 that Jeremy Clarkson tested is the hydropneumatic system and it is VERY smooth but is only fitted to the C5 and C6. ALL the other vehicles Citroen make are fitted with conventional shock absorbers and springs. So don’t expect the super smooth ride from a C4.

Verdict?
Good car, well worth the money.
Don’t get too many fancy extras though, and avoid the petrol engines and auto/semi-auto gearboxes.

you don’t care about the truth, like most people on here.
You just want someone to agree with you fully or it’s thumbs down for them.
But, welcome to democracy.
Citroen have made some of the best engines going, and the diesels are second to none.
They are nice cars to drive and suspension and breaking systems are spot on.
The new look to the range is modern and the stupidity of Citroens of the past has gone.

The trouble with them is the same cheap electrical systems as ever, and you will suffer electrical failures.

P.S. Von I see you already have a thumbs down mate, you said the wrong things and didn’t agree.
Give it twelve months and wait until his question is “MY HEATER ISN’T WORKING–HELP”
Then ignore him!!!!
Von you know the word of unreliabilty is VALEO
