Chrysler MiniVan Tranny Fluid leak Can't Post

MadProblem: Dodge grand caravan se, transaxle leak, drivers side. Van had a factory rebuilt chrysler tranny dealer installed by prior owner. Drvers side axel began leaking profusely. Removed both axles, cleaned and inspected for damage, none found. Replaced seals on both sides of tranny, reinstalled wxels. Still leaked, but much slower. Removed both axles again, measured for wear with micrometer. Shafts were worn down to 1/1000th of and inch less than spec'd diameter of new seals, at point of contact with seals. Replaced with new rebuilt drive shafts, replaced seals again. No leak on passenger side shaft, very small drip on drivers side shaft after road testing when parked and shut off. Leak stops after a few drips. During both removals and replacements, housing cleaned and carefully inspected, with no signs of pitting scoring or cracking at all. Finally as a last resort, loosened mount bolts, shifted trans axle and engine toward drivers side of vehicle and retightened bolts. Results were the same, after road testing, parked van shut off put cardboard under trans axle. Very small slow drip from around drivers side shaft, that stops shortly afterwards. Also, put atv sealant around the base of metal housing on new seal where it seats against housing of trans axel in case there were imperfections in the surface I could not detect but it did not help. Anyone ever come across this problem before ? Any suggestions of anything I may have over looked ? Have been all over the net searching and nobody seems to have come across this problem ? Any ideas about anything I may have overlooked ?

Re: [JP56] Chrysler MiniVan Tranny Fluid leak [In reply to] Can't Post

Just joined forum today and have found it interesting on some of replies.
I don't know if I can help or not but will give it a whirl, before starting my own business as an automotive inspector/adjuster I was aa ASE Master Tech and specialized in transmission repair for 30 years. Without seeing the vehicle etc. it sounds like your problem is in the axel housing, if the bushing in the housing is damaged, worn or improperly installed this will cause the problem you are talking about. You may need to remove housing and install/have installed a new bushing, if bushing is not correct it will allow fluid to go between the axel shaft and bushing and build up behind the seal a then leak out.
Hope this helps. you can find other free automotive tips and information on my site at www.jtcbiz.com.
Thanks
Jack
