Q: When I use my A/C it smells. Everyone thinks it is an abnormally strong odor. I agree. How can I trace the source of this problem and correct it? A: You're not alone, other vehicle manufacturers have an A/C odor problem too. But what is interesting about your vehicle is that there can be two different reasons for the odor problem. A/C systems cool and dry incoming air. The moisture that is removed goes to the bottom of the A/C box and out a drain. It is important that the drain be free of dirt, leaves, etc. If water collects (small pond) inside of the A/C system all kinds of nasty things will grow that smell every time the A/C is turned on. There is a factory approved cleaner and procedure that is used to destroy the results of the fermented pond water. The second possible cause is the A/C evaporator. Chrysler used a coating on the evaporator which, unknown at the time, reacts to moisture. This reaction causes foul odor. The fix is a replacement evaporator. You should see your Chrysler dealer about correcting this problem.
