96 Hyundai Elantra Changing the Timing Belt

Q: I intend to change the timing belt on my ‘96 Hyundai Elantra. To access the timing belt I need to remove the crankshaft pulley. Is the nut securing the crankshaft pulley a left hand screw? A: I’m willing to bet coffee the reason you’re asking which way that bolt turns is because you tried but couldn’t get it to back off, it’s in there really tight! The bolt has a right handed thread and the old rule of left loosey applies. To make life easier on yourself, see if you can pay an area shop to loosen the bolt for you with an impact wrench and only lightly tighten it. With that problem out of the way you can then change your timing belt. When done don’t forget to properly tighten the bolt, you wouldn’t want it to loosen up.
