96 Jeep Cherokee Driveline Shakes

Q: Our 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 liter has a vibration in the driveline when the torque converter locks up. It's most prevalent at high speeds and under load, say 75 MPH which is a legal speed in Arizona. However, it is also noticeable at 70 MPH on uphill sections. Shifting to third out of overdrive seems to eliminate the problem which also eliminates the possibility of wheel balance. Any suggestions or ideas? A: I'm in agreement that tire balance is not the problem. But not in full agreement that it's a transmission related problem yet. An ignition related problem can be very deceiving during the driving condition you're describing. By changing transmission gears you're changing the load on the engine which reduces the demands on the ignition system. The lock-up torque converter on many of today's computerized vehicles will activate even when the transmission is not in overdrive. Because the vibration occurs under load and not at a specified RPM in the highest gear, I would want to be sure that the ignition system is not misleading you. Don't wait to have your problem diagnosed and have your concerns documented by the dealer in the event there is a transmission problem for warrantee work.
