98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Quadra Trac Whine and Down Wind Odor Can't Post

Q: I recently purchased a '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Quadra Trac 4WD. When I turn sharply, there is a "grinding" noise and the vehicle seems to shake. It seems to be worse after sitting idle for a while. I took it back to the dealer and they said it was "normal" for 4WDs to do this. The dealer said it was the wheels slipping on the pavement. It doesn't make sense to me. Also, between 60 and 70 mph there is a high pitched whine or singing. The car only has 6000 miles on it. What do you think?

A: What do I think? Stay up wind of that service writer! He/she is full of it! In no way is it normal for your Jeep Grand Cherokee to shake, grind or whine. There's no doubt in my mind that someone is trying to put you off. I suggest pushing harder to have your problem resolved. Make a few phone calls and follow up letters to the dealership and Chrysler Corp. They don't enjoy hearing about a service department's shortcomings. Be sure to document your visits. If the dealership fails to correct the problem, your state's Lemon Law could assist you in getting a Jeep Grand Cherokee that works right. Be persistent.
