Gm transmissions : is it REALLY needed to shift it from overdrive to 3 when coming into town?

Question by churchguy9147: Gm transmissions : is it REALLY needed to shift it from overdrive to 3 when coming into town?
the guy I baught this 96 cavalier Z24 from said that gm transmissions have a hard time if you DONT switch to 3 when in town that if you do your gas mileage will suffer some but will prolong the life of the tranny (FYI: the car has 178k on it)….. I want to know if any GM mechanics think there is any truth in this as gas mileage suffers some….. ALSO any advice for me?

Overdrive is more for highway driving. In the city running in 3rd eats more gas. But its better on the tranny!

there is no advantage to shifting to 3, this just keeps the transmission from shifting into overdrive, if it is functioning properly just leave it in D all the time

“Overdrive” in GM product automatics is not a true overdrive. It is rather a lock up torque converter, controlled by a tiny TCC solenoid valve located in the transmission. The function is totally automatic, and seldom will ever engage in town…unless you get up to about 45 to 50 mph.

So no, it is not necessary to manually downshift an automatic transmission…just enjoy driving and drive safely…

you dont have to but over a long period of time you could extend the life by not driving in overdrive provided you maintain it properly the less shifting the less wear basicly overdrive is for hihgway use it helps gas mileage if a steady speed over 55 is kept in town its not needed and will consume more gas if used in town please note there are several variables and we are talking pennies on the gallon but money is money
