Question by c3: How much would restoring a 1958 Buick Special cost?
I found a really nice light blue ’58 Buick Special that they’re asking 8900 for, no restorations except a new coat of paint. The spedometer, windshield wiper motor, and am radio don’t work. How much would it cost to fully restore it, with new upholstery, new chrome, fixing the 3 things that are broken, and just other general restorations? Thanks.

If you plan on doing most of the work your self, it will cost a lot less, but seeing how your asking the question, I’m guessing you want to pay some one to restore it for you. Your looking at anywhere from 10,000 to 50,000 dollars, depending on what it needs. most of the money will be on labor. I you take out the seats, and the chrome, have the seat reupholstered, have the chrome stripped and re dipped, you will save a bit of money. The speedometer could just be a bad cable. The wiper motor is way cheaper if you go aftermarket or have it rebuilt and do the install your self. The radio can also be repaired. Shop around and find a quality electronic guy and shops.

Gotta replace a water pump tonight – and it’s getting dark fast!
I understand that I need to loosen the tensioner, but it’s not real obvious how that is done on this make/model. I don’t see any obvious way to loosen it short of a 6lb sledge hammer (and that option hasn’t been ruled out!)

well the judge just approved the bankruptcy plan which means shareholders should be wiped out so no. If they don’t get wiped out then you may see the company at $ 1-2 in a few years. If the environment is kind to it and Ford doesn’t try to beat em while they are down (so to speak) they may make it to $ 4.

Over the years, Buick has tried to shake this stereotype (Gran Sport, GN, GSX, etc…) but it still persists.
Even Oldsmobile (Buick’s close cousin) used the ad slogan that “this is not your father’s Oldsmobile” when they introduced the Aurora.
I say if you like the car….buy it. What do you really care what some other people may think?

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Buick dealers saw Buick sales soar past top luxury brands for the month of February. MI Auto Times is announcing Buick has surpassed Lexus for the second month in a row and outsold Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Acura.

“Being a part of the Buick legacy as it blossoms into what it is today is an indescribable feeling,” Tom Moran, President of Buick GMC Detroit Metro Local Marketing Association, a group that represents 23 Buick GMC dealers in the Detroit Metro area, told MI Auto Times. “Watching an already strong brand take the lead over other luxury brands is a testament to the design of our Buick models and the people behind them. We are eager to see how far Buick can travel this year.”

For the month of February, Buick sold 15,807 units, which is up 73.3 percent from Feb. 2010. The total units sold by Buick are almost 2,000 more vehicles than Lexus, which sold 13,814 units in February. Year to date, Buick has sold 29,076 vehicles to Lexus’ 26,674.

Michigan Buick dealers stock the four Buick models available which include the Buick Enclave crossover and the three mid-luxury sedans Buick Lucerne, Buick LaCrosse, Buick Regal. Lexus on the other hand, has nine different models. Lexus only increased 0.2 percent from last February. Mercedes-Benz sold 15,464 vehicles with a 5.1 percent growth from last year while Audi sold 7,753 cars with 24.7 percent change over last year. Acura sold 10,796 units which showed growth of 20.8 percent from last February.

It is unknown how long Buick vehicles will hold this No. 1 spot from Lexus and others, but with talks of adding several new vehicles to the Buick lineup, Buick will continue to make strides forward and be a strong force to compete with in the luxury vehicle market and elsewhere. It was be difficult for luxury brands such as Lexus to catch up to Buick, but only time will tell how the road will go.

A change that could be found on the Buick Lucerne VIP would be its bumper. The bumper has gone on extending itself by two inches. That way, Whitmire did say that the extension of the bumper really did work wonders to actually deviate the attention of people from the vehicle’s flat nose. Aside from the bumper, the air intake which was previously found below the bumper was also changed. It was cut out in the middle and so now it actually extends all the way across the bumper. There also has been an addition of a new mesh cover so as to keep the air intake just quite clean enough. All the vehicle’s side moldings were also taken away and in their place, new side skirts were put in. The new side skirts are actually some 1.5 inches farther compared to the original Buick Lucerne.

Whitmere did continue to explain, “By continuing the beltline all the way to the extended rear lip spoiler, it looks a little bit like the Mercedes CLS.”

This is a video of me reassembling the steering column in my 1990 Buick Lesabre after tearing it apart. I had to make the shifter move but had lost the keys. In the process I dislodged a vital component of the ignition system, a metal rod spanning the gap between the igintion tumbler and the ignition switch. My solution? A pull switch start
