Cars with automatic transmission are gaining ground in the India. Hardly a few people had heard of automatic transmission in cars a few years ago. Unlike the West, the car drivers here were fond of manual transmission more and to meet their requirements the Indian car market here was full of cars with manual transmission system. People wanted to feel the pleasure of driving and thus stayed away from buying cars with automatic transmission.

While driving, an automatic transmission system in a car does not require a driver’s intervention. The driver just needs to only use the acceleration and brake pedals, and can enjoy the drive without changing the gears. Interestingly, 95% of car buyers in the United States go for cars that have automatic transmission. However, it did not appeal to customers for long here. Now those days are gone. The cars with automatic transmission are gaining popularity, particularly among the women.

Basically the concept of automatic transmission in cars is still new to India. Being a flagship model of Mahindra & Mahindra, the Scorpio is also the first sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission in the country. Leading Japanese car maker Honda is released its variants with automatic transmissions Civic, Accord, City and the CR-V to the Indian market and they are being widely well received by the customers here. American auto major General Motors is offering a four-speed automatic gearbox option for the Chevrolet Optra. Its Captiva LTZ comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai’s small car Santro Xing comes with automatic transmission and an H-matic four-speed automatic transmission is available in the Sonata 2.7 V6 variant. Maruti Udyog’s Wagon R and the Esteem also feature a three-speed automatic transmission system. As a special offer on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Hyundai released the automatic version of the Santro. It was a limited version which witnessed huge sales and thus Hyundai was able to find out the target customers for its automatic models. Hyundai’s i20, Chevrolet Captiva (AT version), Fiat’s Linea, Honda City, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mahindra Scorpio and Mitsubishi Outlander are the other models that feature automatic transmission. The Hyundai i10 has been one of the most popular cars with automatic transmission. It received a great response from women. Other than i10, Verna from the sedan segment also comes with automatic transmission.

Encouraged by the growing demand for such cars, the car manufacturers are now offering five to six speed automatic transmission systems which deliver better fuel-efficiency clubbed with improved pick up and performance. All these things indicate that the trend of automatic transmission cars is here to stay and have proved the notions of many people who have predicted that such cars will not be a success here.

Most modern vehicles have automatic transmission systems and problems with these systems are common and very expensive. Knowing how to do transmission and auto repair is important in that, even if you have to take your vehicle to a mechanic, you will avoid getting overcharged. To understand automatic transmission repair, you first need to understand how the automatic transmission system works. The key parts in this system are the gears, the transmission fluid, the bell housing, and the filter. The two scenarios of automatic transmission problems is the car failing to run and the car failing to run smoothly.

The first step when handling an automatic transmission problem is troubleshooting. The most common cause of automatic transmission problems is running low on transmission fluid. You will know you have this problem if you have low drive power, if the transmission is rough or noisy, and if the transmission slips. You should not wait until you have this problem – check the fluid level regularly. This is a dangerous problem because it can damage the whole transmission system.

Another common problem with automatic transmission systems is having a leak. This leads to drastic drops in the fluid level. Transmission systems are closed systems, meaning it is easy to pinpoint the places through which the transmission fluid can leak. These are at the filler tube’s base, at the selector shaft, at the drain hole, at the mounting of the speed sensor, between the transmission and the engine, and at the radiator if your vehicle comes with a cooler. To remedy this problem, go to your transmission shop, buy a sealant, and cover the parts that are leaking. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend the type of sealant you should use.

Another of the common automatic transmission problems is clogged filters. Filters are important in transmission systems because they filter out debris from the fluid. If you do not unclog your filter regularly, transmission fluid will not reach the gears and this will lead to tear and wear. There is also a risk of big pieces of debris reaching the gears and this will also lead to tear and wear. To remedy this problem, take your vehicle in for transmission service, which includes the replacing of filters.

Yet another problem with automatic transmission systems is the transmission failing to downshift and the pedal being completely low. This problem is usually caused by a defective throttle valve cable. To remedy this problem, buy another throttle valve cable from your local tune-ups shop and replace it. This is easy since most vehicle user manuals indicate how it should be done. To avoid the accidental deployment of airbags, disable your vehicle’s airbag system before removing this cable.

If the car is not starting and/or the park and neutral gears are not functioning, this might be an indication that the neutral start switch is defective. The car repair option for this problem is disabling the vehicle’s airbag system, disconnecting the negative terminal on the vehicle’s battery, putting the vehicle on the neutral gear, and then replacing the neutral start switch.

Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid’s Many Benefits

Manual transmissions or gearboxes, like automatic transmissions, are the vehicle’s main component which distributes the power created by it’s engine to the wheels.  Both applications control that engine power and deliver it to the wheels in order to produce a desired speed, but each does it in very different ways.  In the manual transmission, the driver controls the engagement of gears for each shift with the movement of a clutch.  The clutch allows the engine’s flywheel to separate from the manual transmission in order for it’s gears, often moving at different speeds, to slow down, coast, and then re-engage at the correct time.  This allows a smooth engagement of gears at a different ratio in order to move to a different speed.  Oil for manual transmissions act as the lubricant for this engagement.

The engagement of gears when shifting a manual transmission incorrectly can cause a terrible noise of metal on metal grinding.  This noise is caused by the metal gears not engaging at the same speed.  This often happens with inexperienced users, leaving metal debris in the fluid, eventually causing even more harm to those gears in the future.  Even with experienced drivers, the gears in a manual transmission wear over time because they are not always perfectly engaged each and every time it is shifted.  The oil for manual transmissions must be a very specific composition and viscosity in order to handle such wear.

With this propensity to wear over time, the oil used in a manual transmission, much like the oil in a differential, must be a specific thickness and viscosity.  Because synthetic manual transmission or differential oil is scientifically designed for uniformity and more specific purposes, it tends to be better than conventional oils for this application.  Conventional oils are refined from crude oil and are unstable and often full of byproducts that slip through in the process.  Synthetic manual transmission oil is chemically engineered to have a uniform molecular structure.  This allows it to flow in the gearbox more smoothly and creates an easier engagement of gears on each shift over time.  This smoother shifting will lengthen the life of the manual transmission and also increase the fuel economy of the engine in that vehicle.

Another benefit of synthetic fluids are that they last longer and are less subject to thermal breakdown over time.  With oils for manual transmissions being changed at longer intervals than their counterparts, synthetic manual transmission or differential oil will hold up to the stresses of gear engagement and high temperatures created by this friction longer than conventional, petroleum based fluids.

Subaru Performance Transmission Upgrades

There is probably a transmission shop in almost every town in the country that can build a bulletproof transmission for American made vehicles. Whether it is a late model Mustang or a 60′s Chevelle, there are lots of aftermarket components and many years of technology available for the transmission rebuilder to utilize.

The same cannot be said for the 4EAT automatic transmissions found in Subaru vehicles. In factory form, these transmissions demonstrate several problem areas that can cause failure in as little as 20,000 miles with a stock engine and even sooner in modified applications.

Poor shift quality, anemic factory components, and above all, improperly configured torque converters plague the automatic transmission equipped vehicle. This is in conjunction with the automatic’s propensity to burn out the high clutch pack (third gear) and the 2-4 clutches (second and fourth gear) with even moderate increases in engine output.

Realizing the need to take import and sport compact automatics to their fullest potential, IPT Performance Transmissions- a New Jersey based company, committed a large portion of their research time and dollars toward improving the Subaru automatic transmission.

First up on the hit parade of internal modifications is the need to address the issue of valve body calibration. The valve body mods are really the foundation of any performance trans rebuild. An automatic transmission utilizes a network of valves, servos, solenoids, orifices, accumulators and passages that control and route hydraulic pressure to the appropriate places to apply the clutches and bands.

Without going into elaborate detail which would fall outside the scope of this article, suffice it to say that modifying the valve body effectively changes the rate of clutch apply and also increases the clamping force with which these components have to work with. This is why shift kits and modified valve bodies produce that firm, performance type shift that increases the transmission’s overall capacity for power handling.

Next, all critical support bushings need to be replaced to insure that the centerline of the transmission runs in perfect alignment with the centerline of the crankshaft. Ignoring this step puts a lot of undue stress on the internal transmission components.

Many of the other parts also such as the pinion shaft, the front differential ring gear and the planetary gearset undergo various metallurgical processes such as heat treating, Meta-Lax stress relieving, and cryogenic treatment (freezing them in liquid nitrogen at -300 degrees Fahrenheit to ‘reset’ the part’s structure on the molecular level).

Lastly, all of the required seals and gaskets are changed to materials that are better able to cope with the heat and stress that is common in high powered applications. Performance clutches and steel reaction plates are installed and their clearances set to much more exacting specifications than those that are used by the factory. Most importantly, IPT utilizes a proprietary six disk high clutch pack and a five disk 2-4 clutch pack which increases the second, third, and fourth gear torque capacity by over 25% versus the factory set up- this is the key to getting a high powered vehicle make a 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shift instead of just bouncing off the rev limiter.

As for the modifications outside of the gearbox, the next thing of importance is of course the torque converter. In an automatic equipped vehicle, one of the most important components in the entire car in regards to optimizing performance is a correctly configured converter.

In addition to being made with many strength improvements over the factory piece, a performance converter enables a vehicle to better take advantage of the RPM range at which maximum power is made. In simple terms, a properly designed converter will allow a vehicle to launch under more power by increasing the rpm at which the launch takes place. In essence, a torque converter is an infinitely variable transmission in and of itself, and altering its torque multiplying characteristics becomes absolutely necessary when other variables in the vehicle are changed (bigger turbos and bigger cams).

Even in otherwise stock turbocharged Subaru vehicles, ET reductions of over one full second are not at all uncommon with the addition of a properly configured converter.

Transmission, torque converter and valve body upgrades are not only for American made vehicles anymore. Increased performance, durability and more efficient shifting is now available for the vehicles of almost every manufacturer- thanks in part to the few companies that are willing to do the research and development work required for this rapidly growing segment of the automotive aftermarket.

An automatic transmission also known as “Auto transmission”. An auto transmission is an automobile gearbox that can change gear ratios automatically as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. Similar but larger devices are also used for heavy-duty commercial and industrial vehicles and equipment.

Most automatic transmissions have a set selection of possible gear ranges, often with a parking pawl feature that will lock the output shaft of the transmission. Continuously variable transmissions can change the ratios over a range rather than between set gear ratios. Continuously variable transmissions have been used for decades in two-wheeled scooters but have seen limited use in a few automobile models. Recently, however, CVT technology has gained greater acceptance among manufacturers and customers, especially in Nissan automobiles and gas-electric Hybrid vehicles.

Some machines with limited speed ranges or fixed engine speeds, such as some forklift trucks and lawn mowers, only use a torque converter to provide a variable gearing of the engine to the wheels.

The need for a transmission in an automobile is a consequence of the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. Engines typically operate over a range of 600 to about 7000 revolutions per minute although this varies, and is typically less for diesel engines, while the car’s wheels rotate between 0 rpm and around 1800 rpm.

The engine provides its highest torque outputs approximately in the middle of its range, while often the greatest torque is required when the vehicle is moving from rest or traveling slowly. Therefore, a system that transforms the engine’s output so that it can supply high torque at low speeds, but also operate at highway speeds with the motor still operating within its limits, is required.
